And Now for Some Things Completely Different...
Besides Journalism and Energy, I've pursued several creative passions from radio to politcal activism, from music to solo performance.

Solo Performance 2010 - 2017

At the Marsh Theater in San Francisco & StageWerx

Every now and again, I have a story to tell that doesn't lend itself to journalism, music or photography.  Only the stage will do it justice.

I was fortunate after moving to San Francisco to become friends with Charlie Varon, who would eventually go on to great acclaim for developing one-person (many personality) shows at the Marsh Theater on Valencia Street.
Over the years, I've participated in Charlie's solo performance classes several times, developing stories
that only I could tell before a live audience.
  • The Memory of Lint Part I -- Holland Laundry Fire
  • The Memory of Lint Part II -- Charlie was a Good Man
  • The Fifth Metatarsal
  • Aurora (A Ghost Story)
  • Allergic Airlines
When Chelsea Came to Stay 2003
This is a story about a family of friends who lived on a hill in San Francisco. Bucko and Catfish had a great life with their humans Arthur & Terri, until a newcomer upset the balance and changed everything!

Rear View Recordings
1988-1993

Upon turning 35, I realized I had never fulfilled one of my earliest goals -- to become a rock & roll music producer.  So, I started my own record label, put on a search for local San Francisco bands with promise, and spent my first retirement account on two releases.  The first "Don't Panic!" was so much fun that the band members and I decided to make another LP.

We created musical  alter egos in the form of Rookie Phenom & The Nonce and wrote songs in a wide variety of rock styles.

The resulting 45 rpm single and LP, "Roadie for the Kinks" was remarkably successful, earning airplay on college radio stations around the country, and even landing a feature spot on the nationally broadcast Dr. Demento radio program!

Rock Radio KIDZ

Theatre Jones 1992-93

My radio buddy, Jeff Hanley, wanted to write a musical comedy about a rock radio station. So, we collaborated on the music, with the Nonce supplying several new songs in addition to revamped versions of tunes from "Roadie".  The resulting play, "Rock Radio KIDZ" played for a few months down in Ventura, on the California coast.
Anti-Nuclear Activism 1980- 1984
As a working journalist, I tried to be non-partisan and apolitical.  But the constant threat of worldwide destruction from an ever-increasing nuclear weapons arsenal (both in the US and the Soviet Union), pushed me into joining a fabulous and fun group of activists that we called
Legs Against Arms.
We put on a highly successful 10K run and raised over $80,000, which we used to create and place impactful television ads urging citizens to contact their Congressional representatives to vote against continued funding for anti-ballistic missiles.
And it worked!

So, the next time around, we created "Give Peace a Dance", a 24-hour dance marathon to raise funds for further activism. GPAD started in Seattle as part of the 1983 NW Peace Festival, but the idea soon was picked up by other groups in Portland and San Francisco.

KZAM & FM Radio 1977-1980 & KJZZ Modern Jazz 1982

KZAM is a legendary radio station in the Seattle market that began broadcasting "Adult Alternative" music and serious local news on April 1, 1975.  When I moved to Seattle in '76, looking for radio work, it became the only station that I listened to.  Then, after producing a series of freelance contributions to the Sunday Magazine program, including "Ecotopia" and "The Seattle Sampler" I earned a spot as weekend, late-night, fill-in disc jockey.

As marginal as that may have been, it was a stepping stone to other radio gigs, with KBLE-FM and KEZX-FM, the Physicians Radio Network and NPR programs, and as producer of the award-winning "Neighborhood News Review".  For a brief time, I did "Money Talks..." business news reports for KJZZ, on the former KZAM frequency.

It was all enough to win me a forever place as a KZAM alum, joining a terrific group of people who still get together to celebrate this landmark station and the music it brought to a generation of listeners.
